ABOUT US

Verney College was established in 1975 and originally catered for Portuguese children who having relocated from Mozambique and Angola found it difficult to integrate in an English medium system of education.

Registered with both the South African and Portuguese Education authorities, the school soon became significant with academic success and defying apartheid laws.Verney accepted children from all nationalities, race and religion, truly multi-racial school.
Our defiance of the apartheid laws cost us the right to any government or corporate subsidies.
Despite the financial setbacks we grew in number and strength and our hard work was finally rewarded with the donation of our present premises in 1992 by the Department of Education.

OUR MOTTO “Knowledge is the light”.

OUR BADGE is a pictorial representation of our motto – two school children walking towards the ”light”.

OUR SCHOOL’S NAME, was chosen as a tribute to a great educator/teacher and writer
LOUIS VERNEY who in 1746 reformed and liberalised Portugal’s system of education . His most famous book “The true method of studying” became a landmark in European teaching methods.

A CURRICULUM OF CARE

As teachers/educators, our fundamental commitment is to our students and their pursuit of meaningful and successful lives and careers.

A Verney College Educator undertakes to combine skill and love and creates masterpieces by teaching with the heart.
“Good teaching cannot be reduced to technique – good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher.”

  The Courage to Teach

We believe that providing a high standard of education alone, is not conducive to our goal. It has to go beyond the classroom scenario.

At Verney College, our commitment is to be open minded, accept and respect every student’s individuality and encourage them to become self confident and determined to succeed in all aspects of life.
We have embraced the philosophy of forging and developing friendships with our pupils, creating a bond with them which will enable us to assess their personalities, their weaknesses and their strengths, and to create a new generation where respect, compassion, tolerance and determination to succeed become priorities in their lives – present and future!

Regardless of I.Q , we believe that a well developed and balanced E.Q ( Emotional intelligence) will enable our students to succeed. It is important  that our students feel comfortable, self confident and ready to face the future.

Academic Excellence can only be achieved once these principles have been instilled in our students.
